ASEAN's Five-Point Unanimous Agreement on Myanmar Calls for an End to the Violence

INTERNATIONAL: ASEAN’s five-point unanimous agreement on Myanmar calls for an end to the violence. The establishment of a multilateral dialogue, the coordination of ASEAN special envoys, the provision of humanitarian assistance and the granting of special envoys to visit Myanmar.

The crisis in Myanmar stems from the military coup that took place on February 1, 2021, which led to the arrest of State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myin and other ruling party officials by the Myanmar Armed Forces.

The Military disregarded the results of the November 2020 election and has handed over the leadership of the country to the Commander-in-Chief of the National Army, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

The coup has angered the people of Myanmar, who have staged a series of protests, with ASEAN recently deciding not to include Myanmar at its summit.

Such decision was not decided in the time Cambodia became ASEAN Chairmanship this year. The Prime Minister of Cambodia has announced he would bring Myanmar back to ASEAN for strengthening the unity of the Southeast Asian Nation.
